Things to Know Before Traveling to Mexico City
Planning a trip to Mexico City? I absolutely love the city and would go back in a snap, but there are a few things you should know to make the most of your adventure. From navigating public transit to indulging in life-changing tacos, these tips will help you travel smarter and have an unforgettable time. Here are the top ten things to know before traveling to Mexico City, based on my own travel experiences.
Top Ten Things to Know Before Traveling to Mexico City
1. Getting Around: Use Uber or Walk
Tip: Uber is safe and cheap, but leave plenty of time for traffic.
You can take the metro, but it takes a while to figure out and I don’t recommend taking it at night unless you are super familiar with the city. Locals told us that the metro can be helpful when traffic is at its peak, but otherwise its probably best for tourists to use Ubers.
We relied heavily on Uber for getting around, especially for trips like our visit to Xochimilco’s canals (a must-do!). Just be prepared for Mexico City’s legendary traffic—it took us over an hour and a half to get back from Xochimilco. For shorter trips, I recommend walking, especially in neighborhoods like Roma Norte or Condesa.
2. Prepare for the Altitude
Tip: Mexico City is over 7,000 feet above sea level, so pace yourself and stay hydrated.
When we arrived, we definitely felt the altitude—short walks left us winded, and one friend had a slight headache. To acclimate, drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activities your first day, and pack medication if you’re prone to altitude sickness. I created an itinerary that caters toward building up your itinerary day by day here.
3. Watch what you eat and drink
Tip: Try everything, but stick to busy spots where food is freshly prepared. Also, be sure to only drink bottled water. The tap water can often turn your stomach (it did mine at one point).
To avoid stomach issues, stick to well-trafficked vendors, and remember to drink bottled or filtered water (we grabbed a few bottles at the beginning of the trip to last us throughout).
If you want an in between option, you can head to popular taquerias that are all over the city. I’ll never forget our late-night taco runs to Taquería Orinoco. Their tacos al pastor were unforgettable, and their hibiscus drink, agua de jamaica, was a refreshing treat.
4. Stay in Roma Norte
Tip: Choose Roma Norte for a trendy, central location with tons of restaurants, bars, and charming streets.
During my trip, we stayed in an adorable Airbnb in Roma Norte, which was not only stylish but incredibly affordable—$120 per night for five people! The neighborhood is ideal for walking, filled with stunning architecture and leafy streets. Plus, it was steps away from hotspots like Taquería Orinoco and cute coffee shops like Allegre Café. Pro tip: book your accommodations early to snag the best spots.
5. Plan Ahead for Bucket-List Experiences
Tip: Book popular attractions and activities well in advance.
If visiting iconic spots like the Frida Kahlo Museum or doing a hot air balloon ride over Teotihuacan is on your list, secure reservations early. For our balloon ride, we booked through Volare (via Viator), which made the entire process seamless—from pickup at 5 a.m. to breakfast and a mariachi serenade after the flight. Trust me, seeing the sunrise over ancient pyramids is worth the early wake-up call. You can find more fun itineraries in my recommended itinerary here.
6. Explore Unique Nightlife
Tip: Hit up local bars and clubs for unforgettable nights out.
Roma Norte’s nightlife was a highlight of our trip. We loved Gin Gin for its edgy vibe and cocktails and had an amazing time dancing at Patrick Miller, where locals showed off full-blown dance routines. One night, we even found a hidden bar called Xaman, where the ambiance and drinks felt like stepping into another world. Always check reviews and make reservations where possible, as popular spots get packed.
7. Bring Cash for Markets and Smaller Shops
Tip: Many places, especially markets and street vendors, are cash-only.
We explored Mercado Coyoacán and found everything from souvenirs to delicious food. While some vendors accepted cards, many didn’t, so having small bills on hand saved us. Also, cash was essential at local attractions like Xochimilco and for paying for tour guides, like Lucy, who showed us around the Teotihuacan ruins.
8. Dress for the Weather and Bring Layers
Tip: Mornings and evenings can be cool, even if the day starts sunny.
On our hot air balloon adventure, we bundled up in jackets since it was freezing at 5 a.m., but by midday, we were shedding layers under the hot sun. Similarly, during our Xochimilco boat ride, sudden rain showers added a memorable twist to the day. Packing a light jacket and an umbrella would’ve been super helpful for us.
9. Dive Into Local Culture
Tip: Try uniquely Mexican experiences, like Lucha Libre or exploring Xochimilco.
Lucha Libre was one of the wildest nights of our trip. We bought tickets on the street (probably not ideal, but it worked!), dressed up in masks, and joined the screaming crowd for an unforgettable show. For a calmer vibe, the colorful canals of Xochimilco were a standout—we danced on boats, bought snacks from floating vendors, and laughed through a sudden rainstorm.
10. Be Ready for Long Days
Tip: Pack comfortable shoes and stay fueled for full days of exploring.
Mexico City is huge, so you’ll be on your feet a lot! After a day of walking tours and tacos, we rewarded ourselves with churros from El Moro, which we devoured while strolling the streets. Whether you’re exploring ancient ruins or vibrant neighborhoods, take breaks to recharge and soak in the city’s energy.
Final Thoughts
Mexico City is a city that stays with you. It’s vibrant, chaotic, and endlessly fascinating. With these tips—and a little flexibility—you’ll be ready to make the most of your adventure. Trust me, every taco, boat ride, and sunrise balloon flight will be worth it. If you want to see what to eat there, I listed out the places that my friends and I went here.
